Overview of the CEMS Project:

The CEMS project, led by Dr. Shawn T. Grushecky and Dr. Jamie L. Schuler, within the School of Natural Resources and the Natural Resource Analysis Center, aims to provide unbiased third-party validation for a large nature-based offsetting project in the region. This project will focus on developing innovative natural management strategies and integrating them into an overall management program with a focus on carbon management activities (CMA) and carbon accounting.  This is a cooperative program between multiple private and public partners.  The incumbent will need to be highly motivated and have an understanding current carbon management programs and how they may meet industries net-zero goals. 

Job Description:

As a Ph.D. Research Assistant on the CEMS project, you will play a pivotal role in the evaluation and validation of the EMS process and associated management activities. This includes: 

  • Collaboration with state-lands managers to ensure accuracy and relevance of management activities.
  • Development of data collection protocols and attributes for the EMS.
  • Contribution to the creation of a comprehensive white paper assessing the effectiveness of the FMA/EMS process and carbon sequestration through forest management activities.
  • Integration of post-activity data collection.
  • Conducting site audits for specific management activities.
  • Development of written reports reflecting the results of the audit process.

 

While this is a fully funded graduate assistantship, the incumbent will be required to develop unique research topic(s) based on the project and attract additional funding towards their dissertation completion.

 

Qualifications:

  • Preferably have completed a MS program, in forestry, environmental sciences, land management, or a related field.
  • Strong analytical skills and a background or interest in carbon management.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Self-motivated with a strong work ethic.
  • Previous research experience and familiarity with environmental management or land management systems is advantageous.
