Whiting-Turner Contracting Company

Project Engineer Intern

June - September 2019 • Palo Alto, CA

What I liked

Lots of exposure to different fields, using different software, working with different industries.

What I wish was different

The office engineers were a lot more depressed and harder to be personable with than the field people. Field people put in a lot more work and raised office spirit compared to the office people. Field people felt more like a team.

Advice

Get exposed to both the office and field side of a project and get exposed to as much of the work as possible.

Construction Management Intern

May - August 2019 • Hershey, PA

What I liked

I worked on a three-story vertical expansion of a children's hospital, and I had a really great experience working with the project team this past summer. I was able to walk on-site every day and track job progress from glass installation to headwall units to bulkhead framing. I also got to experience the project office aspect and work with project managers on material and shop drawing submittals. Despite being the only female on the team, I felt very welcomed, built relationships with my other team members, and really enjoyed working with them.

What I wish was different

Advice

Don't be afraid to put yourself out there - I was intimidated by going on-site and interacting with construction workers who had been in the business for 20+ years. It was difficult at times telling them they had to change something but in the end, everyone understood it was only to benefit the project and exceed the client's expectations.

Project Intern

May 2019 • Springfield, MA

What I liked

Although they are a nation wide company, each office is run as if it is it's own smaller company. Everyone in the office interacts, works together, and gets along well.

What I wish was different

I got to work on pre-construction and bidding of projects and close out. I wish I had been able to see more of the actual construction process.

Advice

In any internship you should emerge in as much as possible and do not be afraid to ask your superiors questions. The more interactive you make it the better the experience is.

Summer Intern

June - August 2018 • Bridgewater Township, NJ

What I liked

Friendly office that enjoys working in construction. Everyone there wants to get the project done the best way and the safest way possible.

What I wish was different

I wished that I had gotten more experience traveling from different types of job sites. Instead of being assigned to one site over the summer I think that my interest in construction would grow if I got to experience more of the company’s other projects.

Advice

Ask questions and do more than what you are assigned. That’s how other employees get to know you and show more interest in you.

Project Engineer Intern

Project Engineering Intern

May - August 2017 • Charleston, SC

What I liked

I was treated as if I was a new hire and given real work- not "intern tasks" like making copies. I was also able to work independently on a few projects, which was a great experience and I learned a lot.

What I wish was different

Sometimes work was slow because there wasn't much for me to do, but that is typical of many internships.

Advice

Make sure to make good connections with a variety of people in the office. Also keep in mind that an internship should be treated like an extended job interview. Always be on your game and give 110%. Also be professional towards everyone you come across, even if it is a security guard or a janitor because you never know who is watching or what connections people have.
