I worked alongside a wonderful team of supervisors and other interns. I was on a project site (almost) daily. The company has very high expectations of interns but provides you with all of the resources that you need to succeed. Daily tasks are very engaging and you learn by working directly under one or more mentors who are very experienced in the construction industry.
What I wish was different
I had a very long commute (45 mins to 1 hour each way). However, this is part of the real world of the construction industry, and a good internship is supposed to reflect what the job is like in real-life, so I'm thankful for the challenge.
Advice
Whiting-Turner is extremely supportive, so make the most of your internship by taking advantage of every opportunity and make sure that you get to know your supervisors. In the future they will be the influential letters of recommendation, the people who can vouch for you in all of your future endeavors, and are just incredible people to get to know.

What I liked
WT is very dedicated to training and teaching interns and giving as much availability for construction experience as possible. It was great for a first internship - one half of my summer was in the office, and the other half was on a jobsite. The experience is personal depending on how much effort you want to give it and the internship puts a positive value on that.

Speak to everyone you meet and make connections with you team and don't be afraid to ask questions or ask for an experience. Enter the job with a open mind about construction and the engineering field, don't confine your interests.

One piece of advice that I would share about this experience is work hard and keep dreaming. It is very motivating to show up to work with a motivated team ready to pursue and evolve in their careers and handle the task at hand. Because of them, I never lost sight of my own personal goals.

What I liked
I enjoyed working with all of my coworkers and interacting with all the contractors on site. I was able to learn a lot about the construction industry from a management perspective. I enjoyed the amount of trust I was given as a first year intern. I felt like I was apart of the team and the work I did mattered. Also, being able to see our many projects at different phases of construction was cool.
What I wish was different
There are few things I wish were different about this internship. One thing I wish were different is the hour commute I have to work everyday. This made the work day very long and sometimes got worse due to trains. Another was not having access to some of the companies programs due to my level of experience.
Advice
Don't be afraid to take charge and make decisions. Working in project management, sometimes your coworkers are too busy to help you through every task you're assigned, so sometimes you have to make decisions on your own.

What I liked
I was treated with respect, as if I were a new member of the team instead of an intern. It was important to my team that I was learning everyday and they allowed me to go out and explore aspects of the project and talk to people on site rather than being too bogged down in assignments. On the other hand, the assignments that I did work on were actually important to the project and were used by the rest of the team. By the end of the summer I was actually helping to communicate information with the subcontractors and the A/E.
What I wish was different
I wish that I was given more opportunities to work on different phases of construction. We did site visits that were in a different stage of the project lifecycle but I did not get to work on any tasks or activities related to the part of the life cycle.
Advice
Try to explore as much as you can. It's typical intern advice but it's good because that's what the time is actually for. I learned to ask for more tasks as that forced me to ask more questions and learn more everyday.

I wish that I could have spent a little more time with the superintendent learning about the field.
Advice
I recommend that anyone interested in the Construction Industry should intern with a GC as soon as possible. It gives such a broad introduction to why engineering is important. Project management skills that I took away from this were invaluable.

The opportunity to balance my work between being in the office and on the construction. Also my coworkers were awesome and very friendly. It's a great company to work for.
What I wish was different
The consistency of my workload varied a lot. There were days when I had a lot to do and others where I had to keep bothering coworkers for thwm to give me tasks
Advice
Learn as much as you possibly can. Talk to subcontractors and learn from them as well as Whiting Turner engineers. Try to learn some Spanish it may be helpful. Also be proactive, if you haven't been assigned a duty for the day, find something productive that you can do.

Only being a freshman, I had the experience and still, continuing to grow to be on one of the biggest jobsites Whiting-Turner's Chicago team has had the opportunity to be in charge of. Due to the job site being so large, I was able to handle multiple tasks everyday.

The company is dedicated to training new hires and interns in both the technology and company culture, as well as processes and procedures to accomplish your projects. That was very helpful getting used to a new company and large scale commercial construction. I was quickly worked into a local project and was allowed to get valuable hands on experience working with an experienced team.

What I liked
Large project with many different aspects of construction. I learned a lot about the commissioning process, BMS, and mechanical equipment.

I wish I received some precon training (estimating, take-offs, scheduling, contracts, etc)
Advice
Take advantage of technical knowledge of the people running the project. Some of the company's top managers and executives were on the site I was on and I could have asked more questions
